Here you will find all the references of XBee 2.4 GHz modules supporting the DigiMesh protocol, a network mesh radio protocol created by Digi.
The DigiMesh protocol is therefore a mesh radio network protocol operating on the 2.4 GHz band, operable anywhere in the world. However, this protocol is also available for XBee Long Range 868 MHz and 915 MHz modules,
This protocol was created by Digi to offer a Radio solution for networking equipment complementary to the ZigBee protocol, in certain circumstances overcoming the latter's faults: This protocole is based on a Peer-to-Peer architecture, the addressing of points is simpler and fastere.
In addition, in this protocol, all the modules can be put on standby, unlike the ZigBee protocol where the router nodes must always be active, and therefore consuming energy: The DigiMesh protocol is an excellent solution for networks of battery-powered equipment, as it allows considerable energy savings through standby.
In practice, a DigiMesh network can include up to 1000 modules. It depends on the size and frequency of the messages. The longer and more frequent the messages sent, the less dense the network can be.
Note, the DigiMesh protocol is not the most efficient for managing networks with many mobile nodes. In this case, the "point-to-multipoint" 802.15.4 protocol will probably be more suitable. -> See Point-to-Point or Point-Multipoint XBee Solutions
Also note, the DigiMesh protocol is a proprietary protocol, so it will only work with Digi XBee modules operating on the same frequency, unlike the ZigBee protocol, which is interoperable with third-party elements having this same protocol.
